In front of a raucous crowd in Morgantown, West Virginia opened NCAA Regional play with a convincing 10-1 victory over Binghamton on Friday night. The Mountaineers showed no signs of postseason nerves, dominating on the mound while using a pair of five-run innings to pull away and secure their first win of the tournament.
Chansen Cole turned in a quality start for West Virginia, allowing just one run across six innings while striking out 10 batters. The Mountaineer offense received contributions throughout the lineup, highlighted by fourth-inning home runs from Matthew Graveline and Ben Lumsden. Gavin Kelly and Armani Guzman added to the offensive outburst in the sixth inning, with Kelly driving home two runs on a double before Guzman followed with a three-run double of his own.
The victory sends West Virginia into the winner’s bracket, where the Mountaineers will face Kentucky on Saturday at 5 p.m. Binghamton drops into an elimination game against Wake Forest scheduled for noon.
