From hosting a regional for the third ever time, to then a super for the first time in program history, a 17-1 defeat over Cal Poly to win the Super Regional would launch them to Omaha for the first time in program history. From the early hours of the morning, through a rain delay and into the evening, Randy’s Ridge to the batters box, the energy was there and felt. Morgantown could not have been a more perfect Regional and Super Regional host site, the fans left no doubt their love and support for this one of a kind Mountaineer baseball team.

The Mountaineers were quiet in the top of the first inning. Maxx Yehl would go out in the bottom of the first and give up a sac fly to plate Cal Poly’s only run of the game before shutting it down and getting WVU back up to bat. The Mountaineers were then anything but quiet from here on out. Matt Graveline would steal home on a throw down to second to prevent Matt Ienisch from swiping a bag before Ben Lumsden and Tyrus Hall would go back to back to give WVU a 4-1 lead before a Gavin Kelly double followed by a Paul Schoenfeld single would cap a 5 run second inning and West Virginia would never look back. They would add at the very least one run per inning up until the 7th inning.

The 8th would shake things up but not on the scoreboard. Lightning rolled in and would delay the game with heavy rain and chaos ensuing. Strong winds would capsize a tent set up in the nearby WVU medicine parking lot, several people were injured but none life threatening. They were transported safely to seek medical attention.

West Virginia’s win produces their first trip to Omaha in program history. Capping off a historic season with a chance to take home a CWS title. Cal Poly’s season will come to an end.
