The Setup
Charlotte FC (5th in the East, 28 points) hosts D.C. United (9th, 24 points) in an Eastern Conference clash with real playoff-positioning stakes. Charlotte has owned this series recently, winning the last two meetings 2-1 and 1-0.
Charlotte’s Form
The Crown enter on a mixed run: a statement 3-1 win over Columbus on August 16 — where they were outshot 26-9 and out-possessed 70-30% but ruthlessly efficient, scoring off 7 of 9 shots on target with 4 big chances created to Columbus’s zero — followed by a wild 3-3 draw at Toronto in which Charlotte squandered two separate leads (1-0, then 3-1) before Niklas Dorsch’s own accidental 90th-minute equalizer capped the collapse. Walker Zimmerman’s 56th-minute red card — Charlotte’s second straight match reduced to ten men — was the turning point that let Toronto back in.
Pep Biel leads the attack with 10 goals and 29 chances created, and has been a thorn for D.C. specifically — three goals in his last two appearances against them. Ashley Westwood (27 chances created, two assists in the Toronto draw) continues to pull strings in midfield.
D.C. United’s Form
The Black-and-Red arrive off a rough one — a 3-0 defeat at New England on Wednesday that snapped their six-match unbeaten run, with Alhassan Yusuf scoring all three goals in a 43-minute span. Before that they’d strung together five matches without a loss (D-D-W-D-D). D.C. is chasing their first road win since May, and their away form is shaky: just 1 win in their last 6 on the road. Tai Baribo (12 goals) is their main scoring threat, with Sean Johnson having started every match in net.
The Numbers That Matter
• Charlotte: 8-1-2 when scoring first, 0-6-2 when conceding first
• D.C.: 4-1-2 when scoring first, 1-5-5 when allowing the opener
• Charlotte are 6-3-2 (W-D-L) at home this season, winning three of their last four at Bank of America Stadium
Bottom Line
First goal will likely decide this one given how extreme both teams’ splits are. Charlotte’s home form and Biel’s history against D.C. make them the deserved favorites (odds around 4/5), but this Crown side has shown a habit of not closing games out once they build a lead — something D.C. will be looking to exploit if they can nick the opener.
