PITTSBURGH — One of the most electric offensive matchups in college baseball continues Saturday at Charles L. Cost Field, as Pitt and No. 3 Georgia Tech meet in game two of a high-scoring ACC series.
Georgia Tech took the opener 11–9 on Friday, but the result only reinforced what this weekend has the potential to be — one of the most explosive series in the country.
The Yellow Jackets (17–4, 4–2 ACC) entered the series as one of the hottest offensive teams in the nation, leading Division I in batting average (.381), on-base percentage (.502), and total runs scored. Their ability to string together hits and apply constant pressure was evident in game one, where they built enough offense early to hold off a late Pitt surge.
On the other side, Pitt (14–5, 2–2 ACC) proved it can go toe-to-toe with one of the nation’s best. The Panthers’ lineup, led by standout outfielder Lorenzo Carrier, has been among the most productive in the ACC, ranking near the top nationally in scoring, slugging percentage, and on-base percentage. Friday’s nine-run performance showed their ability to respond quickly and keep games within reach.
Saturday’s matchup could hinge on pitching execution in what has quickly become an offense-driven series. Georgia Tech is expected to turn to left-hander Dylan Loy (2.45 ERA), while Pitt is projected to counter with Vincent Spizzoucco.
Keys to the Game
Georgia Tech:
Continue applying offensive pressure early. The Yellow Jackets thrive when they control the tempo at the plate, forcing opposing pitching staffs into difficult situations. Limiting free bases and avoiding a repeat of late-game pitching struggles will be just as important.
Pitt:
Capitalize on momentum swings. The Panthers showed in the opener they can match Georgia Tech offensively — timely hitting and controlling innings on the mound will be key to turning close moments into a series-evening win.
With two powerful lineups and a series still up for grabs, Saturday’s game presents another opportunity for both teams to make a statement in what is shaping up to be one of the most entertaining matchups of the weekend.
