A Career Worth Noting
Joey Isabella was an absolute blast to follow this season, and even more so to cover in person. In just the two games I had the opportunity to be on the sideline for, he hauled in 10 receptions for 156 yards and three touchdowns — numbers that jump off the page, but only begin to tell the story. Whether it was his crisp route running, his ability to create separation, or the way he attacked the ball in the air, Isabella consistently made his presence felt whenever the ball came his way.

What stood out just as much as the production was the effort behind it. Every snap, every route, every moment between whistles, Isabella was locked in. There was no easing up once the ball left his hands. He finished plays, communicated constantly, and carried himself with the kind of urgency that elevates everyone around him. Giving 110 percent wasn’t something he turned on when the cameras were out; it was simply how he operated.
This season marked my first opportunity to watch Isabella in person, but it didn’t take long to understand that what showed up on film translated seamlessly to game day. Looking back at his collegiate journey, the consistency is impossible to ignore. From earning NEC Rookie of the Week honors early in his career, to becoming an All-Conference performer at both wide receiver and punt returner, and eventually being named a finalist for FCS Player of the Year, each season built naturally on the last. His stat lines year after year reflect steady growth, but more importantly, they reflect sustained commitment to the craft.
When asked to sum up his collegiate career, Isabella didn’t point to individual accolades or numbers. Instead, he reflected on the experience as a whole, saying, “My career has been one of the best experiences of my life. My time at Duquesne has given me so many meaningful memories that’ll last forever.” That perspective mirrors the way he played — grateful, grounded, and fully invested in the moment.
Digging a little deeper into what makes Isabella the player he is, it’s hard to overlook his background. Coming from a family of nine — mom, dad, and seven siblings — the concept of teamwork was ingrained long before he ever stepped onto a football field. In that environment, communication isn’t optional, accountability is unavoidable, and competition is constant. Those are skills you can’t teach in a meeting room, and they show up clearly in the way Isabella approaches the game.

On the field, that upbringing translates into a player who understands his role within the bigger picture. Whether he’s blocking downfield, contributing on special teams, or encouraging teammates from the sideline, there’s a clear sense of responsibility in everything he does. He competes fiercely, but with purpose, pushing himself and those around him without letting ego get in the way.
As for what’s next, Isabella’s mindset remains consistent with everything he’s shown so far. When asked about his future, he said, “I’m hoping to get a chance to keep playing. After that’s done, I would love to still stay with football as a coach or a scout in the NFL.” It’s a fitting outlook for someone who clearly loves the game beyond just personal success, and who understands the value of learning, teaching, and giving back to the sport that’s given him so much.
In the end, Joey Isabella is the type of player whose impact can’t be fully captured by a stat sheet alone. From his production to his preparation, and from his leadership to his perspective, he represents what it looks like when talent meets work ethic. Covering him this season was a reminder that the best stories in sports aren’t just about numbers, rather the people behind them.
